Interview Tips

The Interview

This is your opportunity to elaborate about the many qualifications listed on your resume. This is also the best opportunity to learn more about the job and the company to see if they are the right fit for you and your career goals.

Before the Interview

  • Thoroughly research the company and the people you are interviewing with. If you’re working with a recruiter, he or she can tell you more about the company. Review websites, social media sites, news articles, etc. The more knowledgeable you are about the company and the interviewer, the more enthusiastic you will appear to your potential employer.
  • Practice open-ended interview questions.
  • Dress appropriately and allow yourself plenty of time to get to the interview.
  • Bring extra copies of your resume.

During the Interview

  • Greet your interviewers with a firm handshake
  • Maintain eye contact while answering questions.
  • Never speak negatively about your current or past employers/companies.
  • Don't interrupt the interviewer when he or she is talking.
  • Don’t ramble. Listen to the question asked and answer that question.
  • Tailor your answers to meet the needs of the prospective job and company. Focus on achievements relative to the position. Give specific examples of your accomplishments; how you solved problems; and how you learned - and improved - from difficult situations.
  • Ask questions. Review good questions to ask potential employers.
  • Request a business card from everyone you interviewed with.

After the Interview

  • Send short, individual thank you notes to everyone you interviewed with within a day.
  • Be prepared with at least three to five references, including their contact information. Ask permission to use your references' names and ask how they prefer to be contacted.
Practice Interview Questions
Rehearse; out loud. If necessary, ask your recruiter to conduct a mock interview.
Tell me about yourself.
What do you know about our company?
Why do you want to work here?
Why should we hire you?
What can you do for us that someone else can’t?
How long will it take you to settle into the position?
Why are you changing jobs?
Explain job gaps in your career?
If unemployed, what have you been doing since your last job?
What do you think of your present or past manager?
What was your biggest failure? How did you handle it?
What are your strengths and weaknesses?
What type of people do you like to work with?
How do you successfully build relationships with colleagues and managers?
Tell me about a time when you had to deal with a difficult co-worker?
Describe a situation in which you recognized a potential problem. What did you do?
Tell me about a time when you failed to meet a deadline? How did you proceed?
Describe a stressful situation at work and how you handled it.
Describe a decision you made that was unpopular and how you handled it.
How do you prioritize your work when you’re working on multiple projects?
What motivates you?
Do you prefer to work independently, or on a team?
What motivates you?
Questions to ask potential employers:
Why is the position open?
What would you like to see differently from the next person in this role?
What are the challenges with this position?
What do you like about working here?
How many people work in this office/department?
How much travel is expected?
Avoid asking questions about salary and benefits unless a job offer is made.
